  • Free tier: Yes

Neon offers 3 pricing tiers: Free, Launch, Scale. The Launch plan is startups and growing teams.

Neon has a free plan; paid plans are priced by quote, but hidden costs like implementation and support still add to the total as of July 2026. Key hidden costs: storage costs at scale, branch compute costs. Verified from 1 sources by CostBench.

Hidden Costs Breakdown

1

Storage Costs at Scale

high overage

Storage is charged separately from compute and can accumulate quickly. At $1.50/GB, storage costs can become the dominant expense even with minimal compute usage, particularly for databases with significant data volume.

hn

Storage is the most surprisingly expensive part now. $1.50/GB is kind of a tough pill to swallow. We've been exploring the idea of shifting from Aurora to Neon. With the recent pricing changes, our bill has exploded even with almost zero usage of compute time.

2

Branch Compute Costs

medium addon

While storage costs are shared across branches (O(1)), each branch requires its own compute resources (O(N)). Multiple active branches can multiply compute costs, unlike some competitors where branch compute is included.

hn

There is one more very important difference here, not only FOSS vs proprietary. N thin clones on Aurora give you O(1) in terms of storage costs (you pay 1 time plus only for difference, which is 0 initially), but O(N) in terms of compute (N clones = N instances). That's super expensive and prevents most people from having great DB-related test coverage in CI/CD. (This is true for Neon's approach to pricing of branches too, if I'm not mistaken.)
